What are the best Tamil movies of all time?

1. Gangster movies: Nayakan (1987), Baashha (1995), Thalapathi (1991)

Both the top superstars of Tamil Nadu in the past 40 years - Rajinikanth & Kamal Haasan - got their greatest hits playing as Tamil ganglords of Mumbai, especially the notorious Varadarajan Mudaliar. Thalapathi is a modern rendition of the friendship between the Mahabharata characters - Karna & Dhuryodhana.

2. Social/poverty drama - Thanneer Thanneer (1981), Ratha Kanneer (1954),Varumayin Niram Sivappu (1980) and Aarilirunthu Arubathu Varai (1979)

Director K. Balachander is a master of gripping social drama. Thanneer is a social drama about water scarcity and political corruption. It is a gripping epic. Bombay and Roja were about terrorism & religious clashes of early 1990s.

The demagogic superstars of the past made their worth in the genre of historical fiction. It was the way to bring grandeur of the past and help people forget the pain of the present. The first superstar of Tamil Cinema - M. K. Thyagaraja Bhagavathar made his mark with Haridas that held the longest running of movie in Tamil cinema [running for 110 weeks in a theatre continuously]. The other superstar [going by the nickname leader of revolution] M. G. Ramachandran made his mark in historical fictions centered around social issues. 

5. Drama - Salangai Oli (1983), Gauravam (1973), 16 Vayathinile (1977),  and Sindhu Bhairavi (1985)

When it comes to dramatic roles - none can beat Sivaji Ganesan & Kamal Hassan. Salangai Oli is an award winning classic about a dancer and is a dubbing of the original Telugu movie - Sagara Sangamam. Gauravam is a Sivaji Ganesan classic of the struggle between a judge father and lawyer son. The name of the lead character - Rajnikanth - was later given to a Marathi actor Sivaji Rao who just came into the movie scene that time. Since there was already a Sivaji out there, the other Sivaji Rao got the name from Sivaji Ganesan's titular role - Rajnikanth. 16 Vayathinile is a classic of Kamal and Rajnikanth with Rajni playing as a villain.

Many think Rajnikanth's popular roles involve stunt sequences. Actually, his best action came as a comedian in Thillu Mullu. Almost all major Tamil actors have given stunning comedies. Kadhalikka Neramillai is a lanmark movie in eastman colour portraying a fight in a tea estate. 

7. War & Strife - Bombay (1995), Roja (1992), Kannathil Muthamittal (2002)

Mani Ratnam is the master of bringing war & terrorism to life. His trinity above shows the effect of 3 terrorism movements on the lives of common people. 

8. Romance/Chick Flicks - Mouna Ragam (1986), Kadhalikka Neramillai (1964) and Moondram Pirai (1982)

These 3 movies are on three different corners of the romance. Mouna Ragam is about a girl who is adjusting to marital love, after being forced to give up her per-martial love. Kadhalikka is a romantic comedy. Moondram Pirai is a hyper-sentimental movie about a guy's relationship with his ex-love who has now turned mentally-challenged.
